Summary: Medical Coders record and interpret information about the health status of patients utilizing the appropriate coding rules, guidelines and HIPPA requirements. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Identify, compile, abstract, and code patient medical data, using standard classification systems. Experience in Coding for Orthopedics, Podiatry, Urology Preferred Resolve or clarify codes or diagnoses with conflicting, missing, or unclear information by consulting with doctors or others or by participating in the coding team's regular meetings. Ensure accurate assignment of all medical codes. Identify discrepancies in documentation. Audit appeals of denied claims. Consult classification manuals to locate information about disease processes. Maintain privacy of medical records. Classify information about illnesses, diagnoses, and treatment using standardized codes and guidelines. DRG and APC assignment analysis to accurately reflect the diagnosis and procedures documented in the medical record Documentation assessment and review for accurate abstracting of clinical data to meet regulatory and compliance requirements. Maintain HIPAA compliance at all times. Education/Experience: 2 to 5 years of experience Requires Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist-Physician (CCS-P) or Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administration (RHIA) in an active status with the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). Must demonstrate a level of knowledge and understanding of ICD and/or CPT coding principles as recommended by the American Health Information Management. Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word processing software; Excel spreadsheet software and Salesforce database software. Experience with other EMR systems a plus. Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, Insurance Explanation of Benefits (EOB) or governmental regulations.
